On the day of his wedding with Amy and simultaneous retirement of the position of Marshal, Will Kane receives a telegram advising that the criminal Frank Miller had been released from the prison. Now he is coming to the town in the noon train to kill Kane, as he promised in the judgment. Kane arrested Frank five years ago and he was sent to North to be hanged. However he was sentenced to life and for some unexplained reason, Frank was pardoned and released. Three other gunmen are in the station waiting for Frank. Having less one hour and half to organize his defense, Kane tries to organize a posse but sees every citizen turns back to him, in a cowardly way and he stands alone against the killers.
Will Kane is a town Marshal. It's his wedding day, and his last day as a lawman. He was about to leave town with his new bride to start a new life when some men come to town who tell him that a man he sent to prison several years ago has just been released and is arriving on the noon train. Kane, and many of the townsfolk who remember him, know that he's coming to town for one thing; to get Will. Will's friends tell him to leave town, which he does, but Will feeling that running away is not a solution returns and intends to face him. Will tries to find support from his friends, but all of them don't want to help him, or are too afraid and all that they tell him is to leave, even his wife feels the same way, and as the train comes closer, Will is all alone.
High Noon is a Western that features Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly. The film tells in nearly real time the story of a town marshal forced to face a gang of killers by himself. The screenplay was written by Carl Foreman and it was directed by Fred Zinnemann.

Hadleyville marshal Will Kane is about to retire from office and go on his honeymoon with his new Quaker bride, Amy. But his happiness is short-lived when he is informed that the Miller gang, whose leader Will had arrested, is due on the 12:00 train. Pacifist Amy urges Will to leave town and forget about the Millers, but this isn't his style; protecting Hadleyburg has always been his duty, and it remains so now. But when he asks for deputies to fend off the Millers, virtually nobody will stand by him. Chief Deputy Harvey Pell covets Will's job and ex- mistress; his mentor, former lawman Martin Howe is now arthritic and unable to wield a gun. Even Amy, who doesn't want to be around for her husband's apparently certain demise, deserts him. Utterly alone, Kane walks into the center of town, steeling himself for his showdown with the murderous Millers.

Innovative for its time, the suspenseful story unfolds in approximate real time from 10:40 a.m. to high noon in an 84-minute film, and many interpreted Foreman's drama as an allegorical reflection of apathy and passive acceptance of Senator Joseph McCarthy's anticommunist campaign. Political underpinnings aside, this remains a milestone of its genre and Cooper is flawless in his Oscar-winning role.A classic of the Western genre that broke with many of the traditions at the time, High Noon endures up to the present as it combines its points about good citizenship with some excellent film making. very bad film, without a hint of excitement. Maybe in the 50's it was a hot shot, today it is as boring as it is. I am a film buff, but rarely do I meet such a flat storyline and acting and characters. The wild bunch is a 100 times better. There were very cheap moments in the film, you can say classic, because the era is classic, but the entertainment level is zero. Why is it that after this The General is a much much better movie, entertaining, full of action, if not in the same league. I expected much bigger twists in High Noon, more tension( since there was none). Maybe next time. The latino chick showed some acting talent, otherwise this "masterpiece" is as flat as Holland.
Some of the results ring false, but the memorable theme song and some equally memorable character acting (by Thomas Mitchell and Lon Chaney Jr. more than Lloyd Bridges and Katy Jurado) help things along.
High Noon is based on the short story The Tin Star by American author, John W. Cunningham [1915-2002]. It appeared in Colliers Magazine in 1947. The story was adapted for the screen by American screenwriter and film producer, Carl Foreman. According to documentaries on the Ultimate Collector's Edition DVD, Foreman wrote the script before reading the story, but when he saw the similarities to The Tin Star, he had the studio buy the rights to it, just in case he had somehow read it and forgot about it. There are several, e.g., Alfred Hitchcock's Rope (1948) (1948), in which two men throw a party for a guest that they have just murdered. At another real-time dinner party, six guests attempt to solve a murder in Clue (1985) (1985). 12 Angry Men (1957) (1957) focuses on a jury's deliberations in a capital murder case. In The Set-Up (1949) (1949) an over-the-hill boxer is set-up to take a dive, while in Nick of Time (1995) (1995), a man must choose between killing the governor in 90 minutes or having his daughter killed. In Phone Booth (2002) (2002), a man is trapped in a phone booth with a rifle laser aimed at him. Two ex-lovers stroll the streets of Paris talking about their past in Before Sunset (2004) (2004). United 93 (2006) (2006) recounts the events aboard doomed flight United 93, the fourth terrorist attack plane on September 11, 2001, and in 16 Blocks (2006) (2006), a detective must walk a convict from a jail to the courthouse 16 blocks away. In the dreamlike Russkiy kovcheg (2002) (Russian Ark) (2002), a French diplomat guides the audience through the Hermitage in St Petersburg, Russia.
