Action centers around the historic and very successful First War Patrol for the USS Guardfish. There is a side story that the Guardfish got so close to Tokyo Bay that her crew were able to watch a horse race, through the periscope.

This is the 39th episode of the U.S. war series, "The Silent Service". The series was about the exploits of the U.S. Navy's submarine fleet. Each episode is a stand-alone tale of the actions of a particular submarine. Most of the stories are about actions against the Japanese Navy and merchant fleet in the Pacific. There is also the odd tale from the Korean conflict. The series ran for 78 episodes during 1957 and 1958. The stories were all based on actual events. Some pretty good attention to detail here with the U.S Navy allowing filming on several WW 2 era Gato class subs.

Each episode started and ended with retired Real Admiral Thomas M. Dykers giving a breakdown of the action. Dykers became a writer, producer and technical adviser after leaving the service. He worked on films such as, TORPEDO ALLEY, FLAT TOP, THE FROGMEN, HELL AND HIGH WATER and SUBMARINE COMMAND.

This episode is about the first patrol the USS "Guardfish". It is July 1942 and the submarine "Guardfish" heads out for the Japanese home island of Honshu. Early in August they attack a cargo ship but have no luck. All the torpedoes explode before reaching the target. The Captain decides to change the torpedoes to contact fuses instead of the magnetic ones.

Several days later the submarine sinks a small trawler with gunfire. They then run into a small convoy and dispatch several to Davey Jones Locker. They then sink a freighter anchored in a port with a near record long shot. Their streak keeps going with several more Japanese cargo ships being destroyed. By the time the patrol is finished they have sank 7 Japanese ships.

The "Guardfish" would complete 12 patrols over the course of the war. The submarine received two Presidential Citations for her efforts during the war. The ship served till 1960 when she was used as a target for the next generation of torpedoes.

The cast includes, Paul Pecerni, James Dobson, Ross Ford, Don Kelly and Dick Kaiser.
