The Talos Principle is easily one of my favorite puzzle games. Expect challenging puzzles with simple mechanics that are full of depth, as well as a thought-provoking story.

In terms of puzzle design, the game puts a lot of emphasis on challenge. Compared to let’s say Portal, the puzzles are not necessarily elegant, you may need to figure out some detail of the mechanics or you may encounter red herrings. I don’t mean it in a bad way, it just works! It gets you to explore the mechanics to their fullest and encourages thinking out of the box, thus solving a puzzle feels satisfying. Some levels can get overly intricate, and can be a bit tedious as a result, but that’s just a nitpick.

I can’t talk about how good the puzzles were without also commending the mechanics. Each mechanic is simple, but has so much potential for puzzles to be explored, and explored it is. Every new mechanic introduced multiplies that potential, thanks to their interactions with each other. Just with jammers, boxes and lasers the game already has so many good puzzles to show for it, and that’s just the first handful of mechanics you unlock.

An interesting design choice is being allowed to do puzzles out of order. This is great, especially considering the difficulty of the puzzles. If you ever feel stuck, you can just play a different level and return later. You are even advised in-game to do so, if you take too long.

The story is delivered via a lot of different elements, via narration, text on computer terminals, voice logs, QR codes scattered throughout the levels. Each computer terminal has some files, which you can just skim, should you not be too keen on reading. Overall it creates a rich world, and lots of thought-provoking stuff, about conscience, personhood and so on. Hopefully you’re not too prone to existential crisis.

All in all, The Talos Principle is a brilliant puzzle game well worth a play.. Absolutely excellent first-person puzzles meshed with watered-down philosophy lesson that's trying to seem intellectually deep and interactive when really it's neither. A mixed bag in the extremes.

Let me start off by saying that if you're interested in this game purely as a puzzle game then you may consider this a glowing recommendation. Just pretend that thumb icon is blue and pointing upwards. This is very definitely an excellent first-person puzzle game that will challenge you to build upon the logic that the game runs on in new and exciting ways with every step forward that you take. And in that regard, I am very pleased with this game.

But I did not buy this game because I'm interested in first-person puzzle solving. I do enjoy first-person puzzle solving, but that's not why I bought the game. I bought it because I had heard that it was full of thought-provoking philosophical discussion.

Frankly, it isn't. At all. And it is because of the utter failure of this game to be so that I am warning people away.

Before buying this I read numerous articles and blog posts praising this game for giving the player a philosophical discussion in between the puzzles. The character of Milton, who is encountered through the game's terminals, is your debate partner for this exercise.

There's only one problem with him: Milton isn't a philosopher... he's an internet troll.

OK, so it's not actually attempting to make you angry. Rather the Milton system is a strawman nihilist who asks you to construct a solid foundation of logic and gives you no ground to do it on. This is not helped by the format which gives you multiple choices rather than allowing you to intelligently construct an argument. These choices hamstring what you can say forcing you to fall into the 'traps' in his logic even when any reasonably intelligent human being can come up with a rebuttal.

In one instance I positied the existence of the soul as being unique to humans and outside of physics. Milton reasoned because people could "jump for joy" (something that animals can also do, again ignoring the established discussion) that the soul was providing energy and thus demanded that I either renounce the existence of the soul or renounce physics. The game capitulated, giving me only those two options.

No way to argue a third case, no way to bow out of the discussion apart from just exiting the game, and no way to prevail or even attempt to rephrase the argument to be better understood because the game doesn't allow for REAL reasoning.

Yes, I know, limitations of technology. Video games just can't hold discussions like real people. Got it. But then, why make the attempt at simulating it only force the extreme limitations of a game on a topic that is effectively boundless?

There are other problems as well. The game offers snippets of text from various sources in an attempt to get you to consider various positions. However it does so without giving much in the way of context or the learning necessary to understand what's really being conveyed. It all has this paper-thin facade of being deep and intellectual, but does not actually take the time necessary to do so.

One bone that I will throw the writing in this game is the backstory. Minor spoiler: During the game we get to read a few blog posts, e-mails, and journal entries written during the last days of humanity. They are incredibly powerful and give a very human perspective to what is, in effect, the end of the world. And not only that, but a view of humanity facing its last days with a degree of restraint, dignity, and even a bit of optimism. It's a very different take on the usual pessimism and angst that surrounds end-of-the-world scenarios. Proper respect to the work done on this aspect of the game's story.

As stated, I've seen a LOT of praise heaped onto this game for its treatment of philosophy. If this is what passes for deep and philosophical, a multiple choice question debate and a few snippets of "deep" literature, then I weep for humanity.

But it is a fun first-person puzzle game with a well-written backstory, so at least it has that going for it!. The perfect balance between complexity within the puzzles and story. The complexity curve of the levels was perfect, always keeping me on the line between frustration and boredom. Even if the story is ignored the environments and design of the puzzles themselves kept me coming back for more.
A fantastic game and relaxing experience.
A solid 9/10 because i'm bad at finding secrets. Talos Principle is a great puzzle game. It has an interesting plot and plenty of little story pieces scattered throughout the lands you visit. Plenty of satisfying puzzles to complete along the main pathway and there are some secret hidden ones as well. Controls for the game are simple. New puzzle mechanics are slowly introduced and often combined with one or two tutorial puzzles to provide an understanding of it. Later puzzles use these mechanics in interesting ways and often combine different mechanics together in ways that require clever thinking to solve. Puzzles come in 3 types, green (tutorial/easy), yellow (moderate), red (difficult). For the most part, you're free to choose how to go through these puzzles. So if you ever get stuck on one you can go do some other ones and come back later. Some puzzles/landscapes contain challenge stars for you to find that unlock the hidden puzzles. There are various easter eggs that can be found throughout as well.

Only real negatives are that doors to different lands use the tiles you're collecting to open them, requiring you to play a tile placing puzzle game to do so. This minigame can get very annoying as there isn't any real skill to it. You place tiles and hope to do it the right way or rearrange it the right way. The starting ones aren't bad, but later on you'll have to open doors using 10 pieces and they can take a while to fit in properly. Game would be better off without them. Only other annoyance is that a couple of the challenge stars are nearly impossible to find without looking them up online. Good luck finding the sphinx one on your own. Only annoying because I wanted to play the hidden puzzle levels.. A puzzle game with a small and unimaginative toolkit. The core gameplay gets old quickly. The thing that keeps you going is the story which appears to be reaching for something significant and worthwhile but devolves in to self-indulgent tropes. Big let down.

Patch for Stabilization:
Hello!

We've done a patch for stabilizing the swing system.

The patch was progressed without any inspections and will be applied by running the game title again.

Thank you..
