U.S. Marshals "Nevada Jack" McKenzie and "Sandy" Hopkins meet on the way to uncovering the outlaws who robbed the stagecoach from National City carrying the rancher's payrolls, and killed the man who ran the Rockbend Trading Post. Nancy Drew, daughter of the slain man, has sold half-interest to Naylor, a respected citizen but in reality the leader of the Scully gang, which is committing the robberies. The insurance company refuses to assume the risk of covering the ranchers, and Naylor is acquiring their property through liens. MacLaine, also known as The Texas Kid, searching for his father's killer, has joined the Scully gang but leaves after shooting a gang member responsible for his father's murder. Arriving in Rockbend, MacLaine begins a romance with Nancy and Naylor, wanting to keep him in the gang, sells him half-interest in the trading post. "Nevada" and "Sandy" come to the post and "Nevada," who knew MacLaine and his father, wants to believe the Kid has gone straight. The Kid is trying to do just that but is forced into situations by Naylor that make it appear other wise.
Marshals Nevada and Sandy are after Scully and his gang who have been robbing stage-coaches. The Texas Kid is part of the gang and Sandy thinks he is bad but Nevada knows him and thinks he may be good.
Although Johnny Mack Brown stars in this film he does not play the title role. That part falls to young Marshall Reed who is The Texas Kid.

Brown is a United States Marshal who is assigned to break up the Scully gang of which it is rumored Reed is a member of. Reed is quite the wild youth, but Brown who knows him from way back when has faith in him even if Brown's partner Raymond Hatton is dubious of the proposition.

The gang that Brown thinks Reed is active in has got quite a diverse set of activities. The leader who is the head of the gang and who Brown and Hatton are looking for is also trying to get title to a ranch that Cyril Ring owns. Quite the enterprising group.

This Johnny Mack Brown western is below par, his westerns are usually a lot better. The french director Jean Luc Godard dedicated his film "Breathless" to Monogram Pictures, he probably must have enjoyed their westerns as so many people did. In this film the Texas Kid is a member of the Scully gang and while on an assault, he is recognized by the Marshall Johnny McBrown, who is a family friend. After that, he starts changing and falls in love with Nancy Drew. It is a typical Monogram, there is no philosophy and no depth at all to the characters, but it has a lot of action and is fun. You can call it a "light" western. The trouble nowadays is that westerns made for TV are becoming "heavy", so "Texas Kid" is a type of western that I would enjoy watching in their place.
