I like this game, but who exactly asked for this? Its a strategic chess themed fps, its worth the money.. No options and no mouse lock. You can fall off the maps and are forced to restart, it does not register that you have left the map and should place you back on the map. Reflections on the models are static reflection maps and look bad when moving.. I'd say this was more of a proof-of-concept than a game, except that the concept doesn't work either. Outside of the minimalistic appearance, there's nothing related to chess here. First off, the game is a FFA. There are no teams. Or, if there are teams, you're not on either side. Pieces don't move like chess pieces. The only thing that makes them different from one another is a single power that they use. The knight makes a shield, the rook makes a block of cover, and the bishop revives peices. Best part? You have no allies, so basically when you use the bishop's power, the piece you revived just comes to life and attacks you. Wow. There's no campaign. The tutorial is a single page of text. There's no multiplayer. The only mode is multiplayer deathmatch with bots. I only played the game for 15 minutes, and I pretty much saw everything. I checked. There are more maps, but that's it. At $2.50, this was a complete ripoff. If you have any lingering desire to try it just watch a single gameplay video on youtube to thoroughly kill any curiosity you may have had.. Interesting concept. Poor execution. I'll gladly update this review should things change. First of all, I like the aesthetics of this game - sleek, interesting patterns and more. There is no tutorial, only a help-screen with the basic rules. This is a problem. Let me list a few issues this causes. 1. Every unit has an energy-state. This energy-state is used both to use a special explosive discharge-weapon and as health. If your energy runs out, you're dead. What isn't mentioned is the fact that if your energy is full, you can't drain energy from another piece - you have to fire more explosives to be able to drain more. This is really annoying since you might not be in a situation where you want to do so. 2. I don't know if there's a detection range in this game or if it is line of sight only. 3. How on earth does call for help work and why is it in the game? I have yet to experience needing that button since the high-rank pieces only sap energy for a second from the lower-ranking pieces. Other issues: 1. Some of the levels are also a bit too open which makes for really stale gameplay. If you're spotted, it is basically over. 2. Random elements play a huge factor: in one game the king piece dropped dead right in front of me for no apparent reason. 3. Once you've grabbed another piece, the game becomes easier. The hardest phase of each game is the pawn-phase.. I wanted to like this game, and the idea of it sounded interesting. There is a help menu that's well hidden on the splash screen, and you'll need to read it because the game doesn't offer a tutorial or any amount of help on suggesting what you should be doing and how. After I read the menu, I tried to play aggressively, and you just can't. If you attack anybody, every entity will attack you and gank you. So I tried a slower, methodical approach. I think a pawn shot me and sucked out my energy from behind and I died. Great. This whole game is a frustrating experience and not worth your time.. Tutorial? Why do you need one? You put the player in the middle of a war between several chess pieces, but you don't think it's important to tell the player how to defend, how to attack. So you leave a small interrogation mark in the top left corner of the main menu where the player can read the basic movements. This game needs to introduce the player somehow into the game mechanics and the concept. If the player doesn't have the patience or the time needed to learn the basics, this could end with the player not giving a chance to the game. I'm not saying it's a bad game but I can't recommend it at this point.. The game doesn't tell you it's mechanics. I just keep dying. That's not how a game should be.
