TL;DR play Ys SEVEN if you're a fan of the series, and enjoy it for what it is; if you're looking for a better story than earlier games in the series you may be slightly disappointed. Still, if you love Ys the way I do, you will still have fun playing the game.
------
For fans of the Ys series, especially those who were unable to play the original release of Ys SEVEN on PSP, I would recommend this game if for nothing more than a return to the world of one of Nihon Falcom's flagship titles.
This isn't the best Ys game in the series, but it is still fun. There is a sense of retreading old ground in the game, most notably with the games story arc. Ys SEVEN lacks some of the appeal of earlier games in the series, at least it did for me. Over all though, it was nice to play a newer Ys title again, and this time enjoy it on the PC.
The party system is new as of this entry in the franchise. It simultaneously breaths new life into the gameplay of Ys while at the same time creating a jarring contrast with earlier games in the series (even though Celceta was earlier--chronoligically--it was remade with the party system). Dogi speaks more for Adol than Adol does himself and this makes it really clear that you are playing a silent protagonist. When Adol was the only playable character you never really thought about the fact that he didn't have any dialog.
Speaking of dialog, the English dialog is a bit campy at times, but I have yet to compare it to the Japanese text; my gut tells me that the original Japanese was not quite so over the top. Like so many RPGs, the story is somewhat contrived to get the ball rolling. However, I've seen and played games with far worse contrivances. The game itself is quite self-referential (e.g. Adol's ill-luck with ships), which should bring a smile to any fan of the series.
There isn't a lot of hand holding, it follows the pattern of many JRPGs of yore where if you don't speak to the right person in many cases you can't progress the story. You're not always informed of what you need to do or where you need to go next, often times you find out through trial and error because the game physically blocks you from doing something until a precondition is met--although this is fairly rare. The game will provide subtle nudges here and there to prompt you in the right direction, but not always. Many of the hints come from talking to numerous people in a location, forcing you to build up a mental map of all the dependencies. Even so there are still a few missables through the course of the game, which can drive you nuts if you're a completionist and not paying attention.
The music has always been on of the best things about the Ys series, Sound Team JDK's arrangements are phenomenal. There are new takes on classic songs from the franchise, and the game does not disappoint on new scores as well.. Amazing game! Up there with the good old Final Fantasy VII. Great story, gameplay and love the graphics style. Very old school :D. The gameplay is great. As usual with Ys, the story is a little bit of a cliche. Adol is kinda flat as a main character, Instead of using narration, the character should speak for himself.
The whole experience enjoyable and I recommend this game for any fans of Action/JRPG.. I always though a Ys game would be so much better with a decent length since all the other ones I've played have been <10 hours. I was not disappointed.. I really wish I had play tested this within the return time of purchasing it. There is no option on steam to give an "undecided" review so I will have to settle on negative for now all for one reason; playability.
Perhaps there is difficulty in trying to emulate PSP games for the PC which I can be forgiving of. The problem I run into specifically is long loading times. To give you an example, it takes an average of thirty six seconds after I leave the weapons shop for the town to load. It took closer to fifty seconds to transition between rooms in the same area. Opening and closing the menu in Blood Omen : Legacy of Kain is shorter than this. I should also mention that I am using a 4.0 Ghz processor so I have enough power to run this. I've also tried several different resolutions and graphic options to help, but to no avail. I could wait this out but life is painfully short enough as it is.
I'll instead have to watch a no commentary longplay of this game online to better judge it. $24.99 down the drain.. Ys Seven is a great game. It's quite a bit different from the earlier 3d Ys games, but I wouldn't say this doesn't makes it better or worse, just different. Unlike the earlier games, Seven tries to add a bit more to the RPG side of the series. The story is a bit larger and feels quite a bit more serious than in previous games. There's now party members, various skills for each party member that level up along with them, special EX attacks, more equipment options, loads of accessories with various effects, and a crafting system. The combat system is also completely different. Aside from aforementioned skills and EX attacks, certain enemies have certain weaknesses, and attacking them with the wrong type of weapon will make you either deal significantly less damage, or even no damage at all. Jumping is also gone, putting the fights in mostly 2d setting. To compensate for the inability to evade through jumping, the game also introduces a roll ability to let you move around faster, and a guard ability to completely block attacks if timed correctly. Guarding early punishes you by making you take a guaranteed critical hit, while guarding successfully charges your EX attack gauge slightly and gives you a short period of time with 100% critical hit rate. Despite all these changes though, this doesn't mean the game is easy by any means. It's certainly got the same challenge as any other game in the series. Overall it's a great game and I had a blast with it. The crafting and skill leveling felt like down points for me though. Farming materials for new weapons and armor can be a bit of a pain, and similarly, spamming a skill a bunch of times to level it up can be a bit of a hassle. I found these two points sort of distracted me from the rest of the game a bit. Beyond that though, I can't really say anything bad about this game, it's definitely really great, and the differences from other Ys games sort of give it a fresh new feel. I highly recommend it.. Pure awesomeness Y's is back, and better than ever. Playing on PC is top notch and completely smooth. Its also challenging and very fun. With plenty of extra surprises in store for Y's fans. Makers of other action RPG's should take notes from this game. Its just like the others in the series but improved on. In other word's, its still the classic Y's, just better graphics and better gameplay. Plus the PS2 (+) style graphics totally work for this. Totally worth it, thumbs up. :). I really wish I had play tested this within the return time of purchasing it. There is no option on steam to give an "undecided" review so I will have to settle on negative for now all for one reason; playability.
